The Rigors of Relocation

Relocation and moving into a new home can be very exciting, but it can also be a very stressful and strenuous experience and it is important to plan and start preparing well in advance.

Once you have made a decision on when you would like to move, you need to start getting in touch with all your service providers such as the cable company, utility, gas, telephone and any other service providers. This is a crucial part of the relocation process as it helps you to ensure that all your utilities are turned off at your old residence and turned on at your new home in time for you to move in.

It is also important to decide well in advance whether you plan on hiring a moving company or if you plan to do it yourself. If you intend to hire a moving company to assist you in your relocation, you need to ensure that the moving company provides insurance that will cover all items that may be lost or damaged during the relocation process. You also need to consider that the majority of moving companies will not insure any items that they have not packed or loaded onto the vehicle themselves. Some people will opt out of hiring a moving company preferring to do it themselves. In such a case, it would be advisable to rent a truck so that there is sufficient space for all your household property and that it is firmly secured in the truck to avoid any damage. Another option would be to look for private individuals that offer this form of relocation service, your local newspaper will be a good place to start.

When you are preparing for relocation, you can never have too many boxes, some moving companies provide boxes at a fee. Alternatively, speak to your local grocer and collect as many boxes as you possibly can. Other essential items include packing tape, a supply of newspapers, garbage bags, bubble wrap and colored stickers. Colored stickers can be used to mark and differentiate boxes from the different rooms in the house, for instance, kitchen boxes can be marked red and the living room can be marked green. Certain equipment such as electronics and fragile items must be wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in sturdy boxes with cords taped at the back and the boxes marked clearly. Packing and moving furniture and household goods is a crucial part of the relocation process as you must be diligent in ensuring that there minimal damage to household goods.
